Top 10 small-scale renewable energy innovators:

I came across this blog that features new and innovative ways to harness just about anything and everything we have today into something useful. Some examples are using dumpsites as sources of electricity, and use of deserts to grow plants and reduce water consumption. Its rather cool if you think about it, and all the innovations are happening NOW, not in the future. You should take a look at the article and be as mesmerized as me.

Here’s something I found interesting on the internet. It talks about how a small group of 30 people formed an environmental group addressing the environmental issues in Bangalore, where the cost of recycling is much cheaper than actually putting the trash in the landfills or by incinerating them. To date, it has over 200 active members, ranging form students, to engineers and home makers among others. It has the same concept of the film “Pay It Forward”, where there is a chain effect in the promotion of service to the community. But here, the idea is reducing waste in the city, as well as promoting a more eco-friendly means of handling the local trash problem.

There actually is a school here in the Metro that takes the idea of saving natural resources to the next level! It built a membrane like water treatment facility right under the school. Its a great way for schools and other institutions to save on utility bills and help reduce the city’s problems on water supply.Though the price for the facility wasn’t disclosed, the return of investment for it was estimated to be 3 to 4 years. Hopefully, this is a great step forward towards a more environmentally aware society in the future.

As many of you may already know by now, alternative fuels are the major trend these days. LPG converters, Biofuels, you name it. But did you know that all these are innovations benefit only to the automotive industry? There is yet to be an alternative fuel source that is being commercially used for airplanes and the aviation industry. Luckily though, there have already been tests harnessing alternative sources such as biofuels and hydrogen cells. An in 2-3 years, we may already see lower aviation costs, and lesser carbon emissions in the environment.

If you have watched the TV series American Inventor before, then you would know what I will be talking about. A product was invented, called the Sackmaster, which is a large shovel with a bag inside it to make sand-bag filling easier. Compared to the 2-man minimum to fill sandbags, this device needs only one person and can save time in filling sandbags, especially in emergency situations. I believe its a great investment, but sadly it didn’t win the competition. This product was my personal bet to win it all, but the judges didn’t seem to agree with me. You be the judge.

People are usually irritated or frightened by bugs and insects, and our family is no exception to this. So, my mom decided to by a cockrach/bug/insect repellent plug-in device for our home. Testimonies from my mom’s friends all say that the device works, and that overnight, the cockroaches just die or simply do not enter the house. The devices work by emitting sound waves that are irritating to them creatures. The articles do not agree with the claim of the devices, even going as far as mocking it saying “It’s like trying to keep a kid away from candy by playing Mozart.”

After a few years though, the devices seem to have lost their power and the bug population in the house increased compared to when we newly purchased the device, and I guess this article kind of proves it. Maybe the bugs got used to the sound? I don’t know. As of this writing though, we still use the device since we have already grown accustomed to it, and the bugs did decrease in number as compared to before.

Here is topic that I found interesting, and thought of sharing with all of you. Its about having the top 8 best Philippine franchises to get when starting a franchising business. What made me fascinated about the article was the minimum amount of money a person had to shell out in order to start the business…an amount that wasn’t too big as I earlier thought! Water refilling stations and food cart businesses had an initial capital of only P20,000! And surely, the return of investment, if the the franchise is famous, will surely be achieved in less than a year, if you play your cards right. Its a good read so you should check it out.

Here’s a neat article I found about eyeglass technology. High Definition eyeglasses are the new trend in this market today. These glasses claim to reduce all the negative symptoms that hound a person with optometric issues, such as astigmatism and far-sightedness. Also, it is very helpful for people that drive at night, since it claims as well to deduce the glare from the headlights of cars at night, and increases your night vision capabilities. If you are willing to pay 20-30% more for the said pair of glasses, I suggest you go get a pair since it can really help you out in the long run. You’ll be convinced once you know everything there is about high definition glasses.

I’m not particularly fond of watches, but I know a relative of mine that collects Rolex watches and always tells us that it’s a good investment. At first, I didn’t believe this was true since I didn’t find the design of Rolex watches to be attractive and its cost to be sensible, let alone for it to be considered a good investment. But luckily enough, I came across this article that supports my initial opinion that these aren’t good investments. A good investment would yield profit in a short time period, such as 5 or 10 yrs. However, according to this article, to even get to the breakeven point of the initial cost of the Rolex, watch, you have to sell it after 10yrs! Moreover, this concept cannot be applicable to all watches, since only a few models, the stainless steel ones in particular, can even come close to this kind of return in your so called ‘investment’. Read the article below and tell others that might be interested in buying this type of watch to b extra careful, because they might be getting scammed if the salesperson is convincing them to but the watch as a good investment.

I have been fascinated with new technologies lately, and my blogs speak for themselves. Here’s a new technology I found rather odd; it’s a new design to the conventional ceiling/desk/stand fan that has never gone through a major overhaul in the past two centuries. It uses air flown into the machine from jet pressure, and releases the air through tiny slits in the edge of the fan, which makes 119gallons of smooth air every SECOND! It is rather cool, and is worth a look. Mind you, the device costs $300, about 3 times more expensive than the conventional one we are all already accustomed to. However, the savings in terms of accidents caused by old electric fans can be significantly reduced since the new designs showcase bladeless fans, which makes it a good investment, nonetheless.

Different types of mattresses are commercially available in the market today. Foam beds, air beds, and even cushion ones. However, among others, water beds seem to take the ire of some advertising companies. Some say that these cause chronic back pains, and even do weird things to our spine and vertebrae. However, studies, as well as testimonies have shown that these water beds can have heating capabilities, which can help heal muscle pain and be as effective as orthopaedic mattresses when these water beds are adjusted to therapeutic temperatures. The savings in terms of medical expenses prevented, as well life possible life years earned can account for the positives in using the water bed. Not convinced? Being able to manufacture 3D models is almost a must in the field of Engineering, especially for us Civil Engineers. Structural prototypes are very important to showcase and to be produced in the soonest possible time. And with the recent advancement in technology today, printers capable of printing 3D prototype models are circulating the market today. Even if it comes with a hefty price tag, academic institutions and big companies would look behind this and appreciate instead the positive return of investment in the printers. Lesser time in producing a prototype means more projects can be done, it would most likely result in savings in the long run, and more comprehensive and accurate prototypes can be produced. Take a look at the link below for more details about this trending technology.

A came across this article describing this new-age type of pillow. What is great about this pillow is that it has a double purpose of being an alarm clock! Unlike conventional alarm clocks that may also bother other people still sleeping inside a room, the ‘alarm’ in this type of pillow vibrates, hence only the person that has his/her head on the pillow will feel the ‘alarm’. The weight of your head even acts as the snooze button to the alarm clock! It is rather cool, and is worth a look. There is even an embedded video in the link describing the product. Please take time to look at it.

Here’s a first. The first car paint that makes the car resistant to scratches, bugs, and even cleans all by itself! Here are some of the claims of the company that produces the paint.

    53% higher scratch resistance
    – 60% improved clean ability
    – 476% higher chemical resistance
    – 100% gloss retention over 5+ years

This definitely is a giant leap in the field of science and technology that would really benefit a lot of people. See for yourself by clicking the link below, as a short video clip demonstrating the actual test run of the paint is shown.

Ever wondered what the future holds when it came to digital storage? We were all amazed with the release of the DVD, and the Blu-Ray right after, but what’s after that? Apparently, GE has come up with a new micro-holographic discs that are capable of storing 500GB of data in one disc! it is equivalent to almost 20 Blu-ray discs or 100 DVDs! Its rather cool that unlike its predecessors, the hologram discs utilize the storage capacity of the entire volume of the disc, and not just its surface (unlike the previous models). You should take a look at the article below if you are as interested as me when it comes to this subject.
